Our heroine’s bookishness, meanwhile, is mainly a source of bemusement to Rudy (Nico Liersh), the flaxen-haired neighbor boy who befriends and dotes on her. In a different, more reality-based movie, their relationship would be a coming-of-age romance.
- Max hangs up his boxing gloves. Max (Ben Schnetzer) is still a Jewish man who hides in the Hubermann’s basement, but his dreams of being a boxer have been cut from the story.
- Rudy learns Liesel’s secret early. In the movie, the adorable yellow-haired Rudy (Nico Liersch), accidentally discovers the existence of Max when he sees Max’s handwritten name in a book of Liesel’s.

THE BOOK THIEF is a movie full of great incidents and characters, top production values and fine acting -- Geoffrey Rush is one of those actors I believe cannot give a less than brilliant performance and Emma Watson creeps into your heart slowly and steadily throughout. The story is telling and surprisingly hopeful in the end.

I only vaguely remember the book and I'm not the type to hate on all movie adaptations, so I'm looking forward to it. I loved both the book and the movie. The movie uses some really cool cinematography and conveys the story quite well I thought. I think the book comes alive in the film.

Schoolmate Franz bullies Rudy and Liesel on several occasions, usually through pushing and shoving meanness. Liesel gets into a full-fledged fight with him, driving him to the ground and pummeling him repeatedly.
