Newcomer Richie Merritt owned the lead role of “White boy” Rick Wershe, and brought it to life reliving that era in the 80’s when the young 15 year old Wershe became more than a figure in Detroits history but a iconic legend. It made the movie seem more raw and realistic.
The kid and his sister were really good in it too. Solid acting all around. It is interesting because it is based on a real person who was just released from prison a couple years ago after being sentenced to life for drugs at 17 because of mandatory minimum sentencing laws of the era.
His vulnerability, however, really comes through at some crucial points, as a kid in terrible circumstances being treated like an adult and being lost between both worlds. Wisely, neither the script nor Merritt go for outright sympathy, but overall I just didn’t find him capable of carrying the weight here.
