  1. Oct 23, 2021 · Whereas Dune (1984) feels like a traditional hero’s journey (more on that below), Villeneuve’s variation embraces early on the faint tragic quality of the literary Paul, which will presumably ...

The new “Dune” only adapts roughly the first half of the book, and ends with Paul meeting the Fremen woman Chani (Zendaya) he’s been dreaming about before arriving in Arrakis. (We’re all waiting to see if a sequel actually comes to fruition.) No one would accuse the old “Dune” of being super-faithful to the source material, as it excises a lot of b...

Herbert’s novel is dense in terms of world building – and it was a huge influence on George Lucas’ original “Star Wars.” Villeneuve’s film creates a visually arresting landscape, though tends to gradually explain the who’s who and the goings-on. Lynch took a more direct approach: Virginia Madsen (who plays the daughter of the emperor of the Known U...

In the new film, Stellan Skarsgård is hiddenunder a bunch of prosthetics as the ruthless, large-and-in-charge villain Vladimir Harkonnen. He’s more quietly intimidating, while the 1984 baron – played by the late Kenneth McMillan – is by comparison a murderous psychopath. He also has oozy, pus-filled blisters on his face his sniveling henchmen drai...

Lynch’s supporting cast features everyone from Sean Young (as McLachlan’s Chani) and Max von Sydow to a pre-“Star Trek” Patrick Stewart. The most eye-catching acting choice, however, is a ripped-to-shreds Sting as Feyd Rautha, Baron Harkonnen’s power-hungry nephew. The character doesn’t appear in the new “Dune,” though that might be because he's pl...

If Villeneuve gets to do another “Dune” and finish off his epic, we will probably see Chalamet ride a massive sandworm. But will it be as cool as MacLachlan driving one, set to a chorus and rock guitars? Doubtful. (Toto and Brian Eno fueled the soundtrack for Lynch’s “Dune,” so that’s another win in its column.) Outside of Jason Momoa's heartwarmin...

  2. May 8, 2022 · For the most part, the acting in 2021’s Dune is a lot stronger than the acting in 1984’s Dune. The ‘80s version has hammier acting than Star Wars, while the 2021 version has world-class performers like Timothée Chalamet and Stephen McKinley Henderson bringing all kinds of nuance and subtlety to the table. But the cast of the 1984 version ...

    • It Wasn't Afraid To Get Surreal & Weird. What makes Dune iconic, revered, and intimidating all at once isn't its dense history and text, but its esoteric side.
    • Paul Atreides Had More Agency. A major drawback of Villeneuve's Dune getting split into two was that Paul's central arc of coming to terms with his supposed godhood was left hanging at the end of Part One.
    • The Harkonnens' Presence Was Better Felt In 1984. Despite their limited screen time and only confronting Paul near the end, the Harkonnens are Dune's most well-known antagonists.
    • The Fremen Were Actually A Part Of The Plot. The bitter irony of the Dune movies is that even if they're set on the Fremens' colonized home planet, the race is treated as little more than a plot device.

    • Dune 2021 Uses Different Languages. Lynch Avoided The Multiple Languages Of The Universe. There are several different languages spoken in Frank Herbert's book series yet Dune 1984 decided to use none of them.
    • Diversity Of The Cast. Dune 2021's Star-Studded Cast Highlights The Expansive Universe. Diversity and inclusion wasn't considered in 1984 in the same way that it is currently.
    • The Visuals Are Unique In Each. It Isn't Just Because Of The Eras. Given the particular aesthetics of both Lynch and Villeneuve, each adaptation stands out as visually unique.
    • The Guild Navigators Are Gone In 2021. Lynch Brought One Of Herbert's Strangest Concepts To Life. An incredibly impressive — for the time — scene in Dune 1984 involves a Guild Navigator speaking with the Emperor, and later making the journey from Caladan to Arrakis possible for House Atreides by folding space and time.

  5. The 1984 version is of course rushed and have a lots of mistakes, but is still more “human” and the motivations are much more clear then in Villeneuve’s movie. The 2021 film is a better movie overall, but Lynch‘s version, even with all the producers interferance, is a more human story which is also poetic at the same time.
