  1. Oct 23, 2021 · Whereas Dune (1984) feels like a traditional hero’s journey (more on that below), Villeneuve’s variation embraces early on the faint tragic quality of the literary Paul, which will presumably ...

Villeneuve’s goal to only adapt the first half of Duneand save the second half for a sequel is one of the main reasons why his version is superior to Lynch’s. Not only was Lynch required to cram Frank Herbert’s entire magnum opus into a single movie; he had to keep the runtime around the tight two-hour mark. Herbert’s dense source novel left Lynch ...

When it hit theaters amidst a sea of Marvel projects and generic wannabe blockbusters, Dune was criticized for its lack of action. There may not be a big battle sequence every couple of minutes, but there’s still plenty of action in Dune. Not only does Villeneuve bring a visceral intensity to sequences like House Harkonnen’s attack on Arrakeen and ...

The acting in the original Dunemovie is fine, but the hammy, eccentric performances are too far removed from relatable human behavior for the cast to convince the audience that they’re playing real people. The actors in the 2021 version, on the other hand, play their roles as realistically as possible, grounding the trippy, futuristic storytelling ...

This is a very minor gripe, but in the Lynch movie, the Holtzman shields (the force-field suits worn by Paul and Gurney during combat training) are hideous. It’s hard to tell what’s going on, because the shields are created by plastering digital clipart-style cubes around the fighters’ limbs and torsos. It’s worse CGI than Tron, which hit theaters ...

There’s no doubt that Lynch’s Dunelooks great, with visuals that complement the words of Herbert’s source material nicely, but the cinematography of Villeneuve’s version truly transports the audience to Arrakis. Director of photography Greig Fraser won a much-deserved Oscar for his work on Dune. Fraser recently brought a similarly immersive, atmosp...

Like Fraser, Hans Zimmer won an Academy Award for his work on Dune, marking the legendary composer’s second Oscar win for Best Original Score. The 1984 original featured Toto’s first and only film score. Suffice to say, Zimmer’s Dunemusic is more striking. As usual, he uses atmospheric noises and a wall of sound to engage the audience with the visu...

  2. God created Reddit to train the faithful. Dune is a landmark science fiction novel first published in 1965 and the first in a 6-book saga penned by author Frank Herbert. Widely considered one of the greatest works within the sci-fi genre, Dune has been the subject of various film and TV adaptations, including the Academy Award winning 2021 film ...

  3. In the 2021 movie, all the sets look identical (larger than life, drab and brutalist), all the costumes look the same, the music is same-same throughout and grating after 10 minutes. Dune in 1984 creates this disorienting sense of truly being in a different world, a different universe, an unsettling an alien place.

    • Dune 2021 Uses Different Languages. Lynch Avoided The Multiple Languages Of The Universe. There are several different languages spoken in Frank Herbert's book series yet Dune 1984 decided to use none of them.
    • Diversity Of The Cast. Dune 2021's Star-Studded Cast Highlights The Expansive Universe. Diversity and inclusion wasn't considered in 1984 in the same way that it is currently.
    • The Visuals Are Unique In Each. It Isn't Just Because Of The Eras. Given the particular aesthetics of both Lynch and Villeneuve, each adaptation stands out as visually unique.
    • The Guild Navigators Are Gone In 2021. Lynch Brought One Of Herbert's Strangest Concepts To Life. An incredibly impressive — for the time — scene in Dune 1984 involves a Guild Navigator speaking with the Emperor, and later making the journey from Caladan to Arrakis possible for House Atreides by folding space and time.

  6. The 1984 version is of course rushed and have a lots of mistakes, but is still more “human” and the motivations are much more clear then in Villeneuve’s movie. The 2021 film is a better movie overall, but Lynch‘s version, even with all the producers interferance, is a more human story which is also poetic at the same time.
