Melee, it's the most saturated class and has the best gear and the most fun progression, it's THE class for calamity. Melee- tanky and a power trip outside of high difficulties. Ranged- Massive DPS, best if you can dodge. Mage- versatility, weapons for every playstyle.
The calamity devs basically had to make two classes, what with the non existence of summoner in vanilla. while melee tends to suck early game, late game it's very satisfying, ranger is probably best from beginning-end, because most other classes struggle early game.
That being said, while I and many others regard Calamity as being one of the best - if not the best - content mod ever released for Terraria, it's a pain at times and QoL mods definitely make it more enjoyable in my opinion. I'd say give it a shot.
