I would recommend for your first calamity play through to avoid other major content mods to get the best experience, as for QOL mods, recipe browser and magic storage are a must, as the amount of new items nearly doubles the size of the game. I would also recommend alchemistNPClite.
Revengence is a good starting difficulty. One of the main appeals of calamity for me is overcoming challenges your faced with. Although I won’t recommend death mode unless your a bit more experienced. Malice mode is only for seasoned veterans or masochists.
Expert rev mode for sure Definitely the ideal calamity experience imo. You won't survive Master+Death, and Malice is being removed soon. Go for Revengeance for your first playthrough, and death for your second, but if you want to suffer, take Infernum for your second playthrough.
Night time can be scary on Rev or death, so try to stay in your house (If you’re on death, zombies can break into your home at night even when it’s not a blood moon, so keep that in mind). Once you have your houses finished and it’s not nighttime, go get some iron/lead to make an anvil, and try to find a few life crystals underground as well.
