Oct 21, 2023 · Cancer is a disease that occurs when cells become abnormal and grow out of control. Normal cells grow—and then die—when they are given signals to do so. Cancer cells ignore these signals and continue to multiply. Cancer cells also may form a tumor at the original site and then spread and form new tumors in other places.
A tumor (neoplasm) is a solid mass of tissue that forms when abnormal cells group together. They can form most anywhere in your body, including your bones, skin, tissue, organs and glands. Many tumors are benign, which means they’re not cancer. You may or may not need treatment for them. Cancerous, or malignant, tumors require cancer treatment.
Benign tumors are not cancer. Malignant tumors (cancer) can grow quickly and uncontrollably. These tumors can grow and spread into areas close by. Cells from these tumors can break away, travel through blood or lymph system, and begin to grow in other parts of the body. When this happens it is called metastasis.
Often tumors are not cancerous; usually noncancerous tumors are not serious, even though the cells in them are abnormal. Cells that are abnormal but not cancerous are what doctors called “organized”—when the pathologist evaluates a biopsy of the tissue under a microscope, the cells look normal and are well-arranged.

Tumors may be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer). Benign tumors may grow large but do not spread into, or invade, nearby tissues or other parts of the body. Malignant tumors can spread into, or invade, nearby tissues. They can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. Also called neoplasm.
