The biggest constraint is known as racing the beam - you don't have a frame buffer like you do in modern game development, and are highly timing constrained when drawing the screen. I've attempted to both create something with limitations based on Atari, while keeping a friendly and Pythonic API.

The module atari.py was created as an aid for the creation of atari 2600 VCS like games with graphics and sound routines using python and pygame. This has been tested on windows and ubuntu using python 2.7. atari.py is used in the example combat.py
Make sure that you have the dasm executable copied into a location in your bash path. Compile the project using the by giving the build file execute permission chmod +x ./build.sh and running it with ./build.sh in your terminal while inside the vcs-spider directory.

Nov 5, 2021 · Not sure why someone downvoted this but the vcs has access to thousands of games free from antstream, plus the Atari vault and the flashback Friday 7800 games. So it truly is the best legal way to play retro emulated games aside from the Nintendo switch that has the nes, snes, genesis, and 64 emulators.
