Battlefield Earth. (film) Battlefield Earth (taglined as Take Back the Planet and subtitled on-screen as A Saga of the Year 3000) is a 2000 American science fiction film based on the 1982 novel of the same name by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. It was directed by Roger Christian and stars John Travolta, Barry Pepper, and Forest Whitaker.
- It features some of the stupidest aliens in cinema. A thousand years in the future, the planet will be dominated by a race of giant aliens called Psychlos.
- Acting. The Psychlos aren’t just stupid, selfish and ungainly – they also behave like a group of unemployed Shakespearian actors after two bottles of sherry.
- John Travolta. John Travolta clearly enjoys playing the most villainous of the Psychlos, Terl. He’s despicable. He wears a huge cod-piece, and he’s fond of making grandiose statements while drunk in a bar.
- Its production design is mystifying. Before directing Battlefield Earth, Roger Christian was a rightly-acclaimed production designer. He won an Oscar for his work on Star Wars, and was nominated for another in 1979 for Alien.
May 14, 2020 · He grabbed movies in turnaround, when movie studios no longer wanted to develop them, and sometimes was lucky enough to have the stars themselves invest their own money into the project (Travolta himself reportedly spent $5 million when Battlefield Earth ran into financial issues). Actors and acclaimed directors were attracted because they were given complete creative control, albeit on a budget.

OK, so Battlefield Earth, wasn't the best sci-fi movie.But the idea of aliens enslaving humanity, and the humans later rebelling, takes the old concept of alien invasion and teaches it some new tricks.
