BZ1 is substantially more true to the playstyle that was intended by Activision for Battlezone, while BZ2 has a much stronger RTS element to it that kind of swings the balance back towards games like SC2 and Age of Empires. Battlezone was the first game I used WASD for movement. Before that I used arrow keys. Both Battlezone 1 and 2 were so much fun. They were truly unique multiplayer experiences at the time. That was when Activision was developing some incredible PC games, from Mechwarrior 2 to Interstate '76. That team was amazing.
I really really loved the Battlezone games and I've been hoping something similar would come out and fix the problems the Battlezone games had, namely the awful AI. That said, I seem to remember the second Bzone being significantly more difficult than the first, and the first was pretty hard after the initial couple planets anyway.
Battlezone 1 (aka Battlezone 98) was released in 1998 and Battlezone 2: Combat Commander in 1999. Rebellion games bought the rights to the IP from Atari in 2013 when it went bankrupt and released a very well received remaster in 2016 for Battlezone 98 called Battlezone 98 Redux.

Dec 30, 1999 · I have been playing Battlezone for 14 years and Battlezone II for 12 years now and have spent many hundreds of dollars on other games, yet I have not found any other game that compares to Battlezone or Battlezone II. The current patch version - from one of the original programmers, Nathan Mates - as of August 2012 is 1.3.6.2.
