Feb 6, 2007 · Battlezone is among my favorite arcade games. I played it often while growing up. The Atari 2600 version may not look as nice as the arcade version, but it is among the better ports to the system.

This one has cool effects and changing conditions, and your tank systems can get damaged like in Starmaster. But also like starmaster, you just fight one enemy at a time, over and over. Battle zone has less gimmicks but the levels feel a lot more dynamic. Both are damned pretty for a 2600 game.

Released by Atari back in November 1980 and created by Ed Rotberg, Battlezone was a first person shooter that put you in the driving seat of a tank where you could roam the landscape to seek out and destroy other tanks.
At any rate there’s a fair bit of action in this game thanks to all of the enemies that spawn randomly, sometimes right on top of you. As a result, Battlezone rubs some people the wrong way, but I liked it even though it’s is more of an interesting relic than an Atari classic.
