I run 10 hives year round and go up to 20 in spring then sell 10 off. That brings in about $1500. I'm still a long way from recouping the first several years of equipment purchases but I'm not losing money year to year. Oh and I make < $300 from honey a year. How many you can put depends on the area around you. Bees fly for 3 miles to find forage.
