  1. Nov 15, 2012 · Why Celluloid? Celluloid is widely hailed as the resin material for pens, but why? Celluloid and hard rubber or ‘ebonite’ were the first plastic materials to be used in pen making. Ebonite is natural latex rubber, which has been mixed with sulphur and heat-treated so that it loses it’s ‘rubbery-ness’ and becomes a harder, rigid material.

Celluloids are a class of materials produced by mixing nitrocellulose and camphor, often with added dyes and other agents.Once much more common for its use as photographic film before the advent of safer methods, celluloid's common present-day uses are for manufacturing table tennis balls, musical instruments, combs, office equipment, fountain pen bodies, and guitar picks.

  3. Apr 16, 2007 · There are actually very few plastic materials that have been successfully used in "quality" pens, for example: vulcanite/ebonite (hard rubber), celluloid (specifically cellulose accetate), PMMA (acrylic, acrylic resin, Permanite, Radite etc), polycarbonate (eg Makrolon) and ABS (mainly lower cost pens).

  4. Jan 15, 2018 · For the most part, care of the two materials is similar (and the Esterbrook material was certainly more robust) - but I think solvents would be different for the two. There may have been other pens made from cellulose acetate during the 30's, and you can test them by burning shavings (somewhere I saw a color table of what color the flames would be for different plastics).

  5. Jul 9, 2017 · Many brands (often Italian pen manufacturers) use a material called ‘cotton resin’. This is actually more related to celluloid than you’d think. Celluloid is made from nitrocellulose polymers, cotton resin is made from cellulose (cotton, the same as that found in your clothing, is nothing more than cellulose).

  6. Jun 17, 2024 · Celluloid and Ebonite Components. Other materials such as celluloid and ebonite receive special treatment such as curing and stabilization before being shaped to avoid cracking or warping. After preparation, these materials are molded or machined into different shapes. Celluloid is usually injection molded while ebonite is turned on a lathe.

  8. Jun 29, 2014 · I'm not a huge fan of vintage pens (there's a reason modern manufacturers have dropped a lot of vintage filling systems and the less said about most vintage feeds the better) but celluloid is a great material which has some downsides and some upsides, just like most materials, and that it's not as suited for mass manufacturing as injection molded plastic doesn't mean it's better or worse, it ...
