Jun 30, 2022 · Published in 1903, Rabindranath Tagore’s novel Chokher Bali is often called India’s first modern novel, where issues like women’s education, child marriage and treatment of widows in the 19th and 20th century Bengal are highlighted. I have read a few of Tagore’s short stories before but Choker Bali came to me as a shock.
