May 9, 2024 · The Church Growth Movement of the second half of the 20th century was the primary means many churches came to embrace church growth principles. The movement is deemed to have originated with Donald McGavran. He was a missionary to India who became a specialist church growth educator through his research on the mission field (Pointer 1984, p.14).
- Intellectual growth. Here lies the primary responsibility of pastors as teachers and under-shepherds of God’s flock. Their duties are to feed the flock so it may grow.
- Numerical growth. Numerical growth is desirable and mandatory if we are going to connect people with God, each other, our city, and our world. There is something unconvincing when someone insists, “Oh yes, we’re small, but we’re good.”
- Spiritual growth. Spiritual growth focuses on our relationship to our Lord. In a personal sense this involve times of regular prayer and consistent listening to God through meditating upon his Word.
- Relational growth. The church is not a collection of individuals like marbles in a box. In the body of Christ we are joined together and receive life and even pain from each other.

This Primer is not necessarily about numerical church growth, but growth in the faith, and growth in Christ, leading to the prime directive for church, which is to worship Christ! When a church becomes strong in the disciplines of the faith and is contagious with Christ, then people will be attracted to that church.
Jul 17, 2018 · A healthy, growing church is honest and looks at all these factors together. Growth is Consistent. There are definitely season for everything (turn, turn, turn). But a church that is growing will experience some consistency in its growth.
