The university is named after the Indian activist journalist and poet, Subramania Bharathiar. He was a leading figure in the nationalist period and a pioneer of the modern Tamil poetry style. The university is located 15 kilometres from Coimbatore, a major city in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India.
