You can easily get from Amsterdamto Delft by train. It takes forty-five minutes on a direct train (often with a destination going somewhere else). The train from Amsterdam to Delft costs 28 euros (ish) as of 2020. From the Hague to Delft, you can take the Tram 1 (€ 4,00 each way with buying a ticket on the tram as of 2020), which takes about 25 min...

From there, enter the old city. People fall in love with Delft for the canals. Do you blame them? Many people go crazy over the Stads-Koffyhuisfor Dutch breakfast with a coffee. I recommend walking just a little down the canal to get a pastry (or a coffee) at Galerie ‘Uit De Kunst’.This hybrid cafe/art gallery has a unique flair and delicious pastr...

Note: If you’re only interested in the best view of Delft and not the church, skip the Old Church and skip ahead in the Delft itinerary. You’ll save a couple euros this way and if you’re coming in time for the flea market, you’ll have more time to explore. From there, be sure to visit the leaning Oude Kerk(sometimes called Scheve Jan (“Skewed John”...

The church building as it stands today is said to date back to the 1200s-1300s and it’s considered to be the oldest building in Delft. Enjoy the beautiful organ, the stained glass windows, as well as the massive bell. Here, you can see the grave of Vermeer. The church is a must-see if you’re into gothic cathedrals. One of the things that I love abo...

Take it all in—and stop off at Kek. Kekis one of those restaurants in Delft that everyone loves. It’s instagrammable, vegan-friendly, healthy, and delicious. I’m low-key obsessed with their Salted Caramel Latte with real caramel pieces. I’ve had a lot of different sandwiches/desserts and the portions are always huge. Be warned that it’s quite popul...

After a feast, I recommend taking a walk to enjoy the beautiful city center to enjoy the surroundings and burn off that lunch. (Don’t worry, you’re going to be climbing 350+ stairs!) As soon as you follow the alleyways, you’ll end up in the middle of Markt, the epicenter of Delft. On one side, you have the Delft city hall, a stunning building, and ...

The New Church, included in your combination ticket, is the reason that many people flock to Delft and it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Delft. The infamous William of Orange lived in Delft until his murder. At this point he was buried at the New Church, which is now the resting place for members of the Dutch royal family. More general...

The Delftse Pauw is one of the last remaining Delft Blauw factories where Delftware is produced entirely in Delft. It’s free to visit although it’s best to rent a bike or take the 1 tram. Click for my guide to visiting this free Delft factory.

From here, head towards the Beestenmarkt. This area was first used as a monastery, but with the rise of Protestantism, the monks chose to close the monastery. Starting in the late 1500s, this area in Delft was used as an animal market up until 1972. With more centralized markets and the city becoming more urbanized, the market ceased to exist altho...

Right off the Beestenmarkt, you’ll turn onto another canal and you’ll see one of my favorite places to eat in Delft, another vegan-friendly place, called Hummus. This Algerian-street food inspired restaurant has really delicious vegetarian food, a good craft beer selection, and massive portions. Don’t get over ambitious with ordering as you will no...

    • The Markt. Delft’s main square, or Markt, is the city’s beating heart. Delft’s Markt is encircled by over 50 historic buildings and is bookended by the City Hall in the southwest and the New Church at the northeast end.
    • the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk) For a bird’s eye view of Delft and to get your Gothic architectural fix, visit Delft’s 14 Century New Church. But first, let me introduce you to William I, Prince of Orange, more commonly known as William of Orange.
    • Delft’s canals. One of the best things to do on a day trip to Delft is to simply walk along its canals. In the summer months, the Oude Delft Canal is lined with barges that were used to transport goods into the city.
    • The Old Church (Oude Kerk) The Old Church flanks the Oude Delft canal. And no; this image does not need straightening. Also known as Scheve Jan (“Skewed John”), the tower of Delft’s Old Church leans at a jaunty two meters from the vertical.
    • See the Main Sights. Now, if you’ve read my blog before, you may know that I don’t think it’s strictly necessary to see all the main tourist attractions when you visit a new place.
    • Stroll the Quaint Streets. One of my favorite things to do in Delft is without a doubt just wandering the streets and canals. I think there’s no better way to get acquainted with a new place than simply wandering around without a destination and seeing what you discover!
    • Take the Royal Delft Factory Tour. The Royal Delft Museum is the best and most comprehensive way to get an up-close look at the famous Delft Blue pottery.
    • Visit the Vermeer Museum. At the Vermeer Centrum Delft you can learn about the life and work of Delft’s most famous painter, Johannes Vermeer. The museum is super easy to find, located right in the center of the city, just off the main square.

  5. Delft makes for a great day trip, for most visitors to The Netherlands. Strolling along the gable-housed lined streets along the canals and Delft Blue vases, cups and saucers glisten behind windows, it’s impossible not to get lost in the world that inspired Vermeer to create his paintings featuring the famous Dutch skies.
