As part of IGN’s State of Streaming event, we’re taking a fresh look at the major streaming services and what they offer subscribers in 2023.

To really dig into the most important part of any streaming service we're going to be breaking this section down into four segments. First we'll be looking at the original programming each platform has to offer, then we're digging deep into their back catalog, next up will be anything that really stands out and makes the streamer unique, then finally it'll be any glaring omissions.

Originals: Disney+ has been built on the appeal of its originals, with the service seen as a way to appeal to fans of billion dollar franchises like Star Wars and Marvel. While those programs launched with the huge success of The Mandalorian and WandaVision, since then the track record has been up and down – for every huge smash like Loki there's been a lackluster Book of Boba Fett or Secret Invasion. If anything, it could be argued that Disney+ has actually diluted the impact and popularity of these properties – something CEO Bob Iger has stated himself – by oversaturating the market. Despite all of that, if you care about characters like Ahsoka Tano or The God of Mischief, then Disney+ is really the only place to catch their continuing televisual adventures. (Though Disney has been adding select episodes to Hulu recently.)

What we said about Disney+ in 2022

"The new price points haven't taken effect yet so it's hard to say, at this point, if the structuring of the ads will be so disruptive as to actually lower the Disney+ score below, but for right now, the service is the most focused on what brought it to the dance than its ever been. Fans of Marvel and Star Wars (and surrounding interests) are kind of trapped here, since there's almost too much content, and too steady a stream of it, to ignore (or intermittently cancel and renew). The interface remains clean and friendly while also being a little top-heavy and repetitive with the massive fandoms, but that's just playing into the site's core content (and lifeline, really). And, though it's hard to notice based on the homepage, there is still an abundance of yesteryear gems to find in the vault." – Matt Fowler

    Score: 8

Back catalog: Access to the weird, old Disney and the studio’s highly guarded "vault" has always been at the core of what made this service a must-have. Disney+ seems like the one spot where the ongoing Disney100 campaign accounts for the whole century-long history it’s celebrating: Some of Walt Disney’s earliest animated efforts, like 1929’s merrily macabre “The Skeleton Dance,” have made their way to subscribers in recent months.

    Artemis Fowl

    The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers

    The Mysterious Benedict Society

    The Spiderwick Chronicles

The Disney+ UI runs pretty heavily in 2023 and can struggle to load, not only on opening but also while switching between branded hubs and curated pages. But when those pages are functioning properly, they’re one of the best parts of the Disney+ user experience, enabling quick and easy browsing not only by genre, but by franchise, character, or holiday: Click into the search bar and you’ll find that The Simpsons, Donald Duck, and Halloween each have a dedicated space in the feed In addition to those hubs are curated programming suggestions to prepare subscribers for upcoming premieres: Before Ahsoka, the streamer served up episodes of Clone Wars and Rebels as a primer on Ahsoka Tano’s animated adventures. It's a really smart way to make users feel like the service is an additive one – and on a cynical business level, it's a clever tool to make the homework required by IP-based shows feel like less of a chore.

Disney+ claims to offer Ultra 4K HD, but that depends on the tier you're using, your device, and the film or show that you want to watch. For example, a Disney+ Basic (With Ads) subscription is currently limited to 1080p HD, no matter what you watch. So while there are some options to view certain films in 4K HD, it's far from the offerings of competitors like Netflix. One of the biggest ongoing issues with Disney+ is the default use of Dolby Vision and HDR, which can be a nuisance to remove on certain devices – on certain smart TVs, you have to enter a code on your remote to get deep enough into the settings to turn it off – and can lead to darker or flickering visuals.

Currently the cheapest Disney+ package comes with ads for $7.99 a month. That will still be the case when the prices for the other tiers rise in October: The monthly charge for ad-free viewing, for example, is about to change from $10.99 to $13.99. Another option is a yearly ad-free subscription, which saves users money by charging the equivalent of 10 months in a lump sum. These price increases put Disney+ in line with their competitors, but with less variety in content, so some subscribers are bound to think twice about re-upping. Unlike Netflix, no matter which of the Disney+ tiers you subscribe to, you can use your account on up to four devices simultaneously. While Disney has said it’ll be cracking down on password sharing, those plans have currently not been revealed.

For what is essentially a streaming service dedicated to the output and archives of a single company – albeit a company that now commands a vast swath of the entertainment landscape – Disney+ is doing a good job at widening its scope with documentaries, programming from its other banners, and, interestingly, concert films. If you're a Star Wars or Marvel die hard then of course this service is a must, but the thing that really makes it stand out is its back catalog of hard to find old Disney classics. While its ad-supported service is relatively affordable, ad-free Disney+ has almost doubled in price since 2019, and with the streamer removing movies and shows, subscribers are arguably paying more for less. But with originals like Ahsoka and Loki Season 2 still driving the pop culture conversation, those price hikes are likely worth it for most subscribers.
