The thing is whether you follow the anime or the manga, there is no redeeming qualities after ep 122. ep 96-122 iare the best but that's too late. The first 48 episodes should give you a good idea about the storytelling, so you can not watch further unless you really like the characters.
Animation on both is great with a well written story. My only complaint is the timeline for Dragon Cry is weird. Phoenix Priestess takes place after the GMG but before the Sun Village, and Dragon Cry takes place before Alvarez but after Makarov is rescued.
