- Kaylee Frye. Played by Jewel Staite. To compare Kaylee to a character from another show created by Joss Whedon, she’s sort of Firefly’s equivalent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Willow Rosenberg, and is also perhaps comparable to Fred from Angel.
- Hoban Washburne. Played by Alan Tudyk. Hoban Washburne, known throughout the show mostly as “Wash,” is sort of like Star Wars’ Han Solo if Han Solo was more of a weirdly lovable nerd.
- River Tam. Played by Summer Glau. Fictional characters don’t get much more intriguing than River Tam, brother of the aforementioned Simon. She’s someone who’s shown to have a surprising and tragic past, being experimented on by forces who drastically changed her personality and gave her various remarkable physical powers, many of which didn’t get entirely shown until 2005’s Serenity (it’s very much possible this reveal was being built up to for a future season of the show, had it lasted longer).
- Malcolm Reynolds. Played by Nathan Fillion. The closest thing to a main character on Firefly, Mal is the captain of the Serenity, and an excellent anti-hero in a show filled with characters who are often as lovable as they are flawed.

- Malcolm Mal Reynolds. It seems clear that Malcolm Reynolds began as a Han Solo clone. They both have a certain roguish charm and are entirely at ease operating on the wrong side of the law.
- Kaylee Frye. Kaylee is pure joy. There is something so endearing about Serenity's mechanic that's made all the more precious because she has grease smeared on her cheeks.
- Zoe Washburne. On a ship with criminals and killers (love them all, but Serenity's crew can be a rough bunch, with some obvious exceptions), Zoe is the baddest of them all.
- Hoban 'Wash' Washburne. Wash is probably the hardest character to rank. He's second only to Kaylee in terms of lovability, and he's hands down the single funniest character in a cast of ringers.
