The college was established as a private liberal arts institution on the grounds of the original Ponce de Leon Hotel, built in 1888 by oil magnate and tycoon Henry Morrison Flagler. The hotel, designed by John Carrere and Thomas Hastings, is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and was known for its opulent setting and luxurious amenities.
