Tennessee food folklore says in 1917, a coal miner asked a representative of the Chattanooga Bakery, Inc., for a snack as big as the moon. The baking company sandwiched marshmallow between graham cracker cookies, dipped it in chocolate, and dubbed it MoonPie.

The Ewing Drive location is sadly now permanently closed, but there’s an outpost on the south side and a counter at the Assembly Food Hall still cranking out that familiar fiery fowl.
