May 24, 2019 · These are the major tenets of improv: Be present: Don’t think about what will come; don’t fret about what just happened. Just pay attention to what is and try not to get stuck in thought. Remember, fear, stage fright, anxiety, and regret are just information – signals we’re not in the moment.
- Letter to God—For one of our warm-ups, we adapted a reliable standard, the word-at-a-time letter. Our instructions directed players in pairs to use that same format—alternating smoothly from player-to-player to “write” a vocal letter—to write a letter, yes, and to have the letter written to God from a child’s perspective.
- Spiritual Scrapbook—Earlier this year, my colleague Cort Worthington introduced me to Photo Album, a lovely exercise he uses with business school students to help them get to know each other and get comfortable with shared control improv story-telling.
- The Guest House—This exercise shares some elements with “House Party,” a playful short form piece that lasts until the host can name the endowed qualities of each of three guests at a party.
Improv invites us to respond to an invitation or suggestion by saying “Yes, and ...” instead of “No, but ...” which changes the energy and dynamic of a scene. This is a good reminder to us to try to listen to others on their own terms, to hear how they express a belief, practice, or idea for themselves.

Oct 26, 2013 · Improv, like a sharp but silly Samurai sword, slices through distraction and gleefully demands full participation. If your mind is elsewhere, you’ll miss what is going on. The skit will falter or fizzle. And like any spiritual training, parts of it can be awkward or downright uncomfortable to ego and its need to control.
