Sep 26, 2023 · Thinking about how IS develops within an individual lifespan can provide a conceptual framework allowing researchers to account for various empirical findings. Many people report a form of internal language known as inner speech (IS).
Is inner speech—just as, arguably, language in general—predominately a means of making thoughts accessible (to whomever); is it merely a means to a communicative end? Or is inner speech a means (of thinking) in itself, perhaps even a means of enhancing our reasoning abilities? In what follows, I will argue for the latter.
