May 13, 2024 · Jaw cancer includes various tumors that form from the tissue involved in tooth formation (odontogenic tissue). Most types are carcinomas, the most common type of oral (mouth) cancer. Your prognosis (outcome) depends on the type of tumor and how soon you receive treatment.
Jaw cancer (cancer of the mandible and maxilla) is also known as oral cavity cancer. Jaw cancer can begin in the teeth or bones, including the mandible (lower jawbone) or maxilla (upper jawbone). In other cases, it begins in the soft tissues of the mouth, such as the gums, tongue or throat.
If the tumour is larger, the surgeon may need to remove the tumour through a cut in your neck or a cut in your jawbone (called a mandibulotomy). Different types of surgery are used to remove the primary tumour depending on the location of the tumour. You may also have other treatments before or after surgery.
For cancers of the floor of the mouth, front of the tongue, inside of the cheek, gums, and hard palate, surgery is the main treatment. Lymph nodes in the neck might be removed (called lymph node dissection) to check them for cancer spread.
