After getting his face battered in Fight Club, David Fincher gave Leto a much meatier role to chew on in his follow-up, Panic Room. The shut-in home-invasion thriller is a splendid exercise in tension, suspense, and closing-in claustrophobic dread. Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart star as Meg and Sarah Altman, a close mother and daughter put throug...
Andrew Niccol's underrated Lord of Waris a stylish and engaging morality tale that follows Yuri Orlov (Nicolas Cage), a Ukrainian arms dealer with a growing conscience about the collateral damage his profession entails. As the Wall Street yuppie Paul Allen, Leto flashes his morbid sense of humor in American Psycho, a scathing indictment of '80s excess, greed, and corporate capitalism. Never mind the iconic business card scene, the way Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) axes a drunk Allen to Genesis' "hip to be square" is horrifying and hilarious in equal measure. RE...
While a quick blink may make viewers miss his appearance, Leto joined the gigantic A-list ensemble for one of Terence Malick's best films, the epic WWII drama The Thin Red Line. Playing 2nd Lt. Alongside Dallas Buyers Club, Leto gives arguably his most emotionally arresting performance in the classic drug use movie Requiem For a Dream, Darren Aronofsky's hauntingly vivid and intoxicating tale of drug addiction in 1980s Coney Island. Addicted to heroin with his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly), Harry's (Leto) perpetual high comes cras...
Playing a frightening villain for the second time in a row (after Suicide Squad), Leto leaned into the wicked role of Niander Wallace in Blade Runner 2049. The malevolent CEO of the Wallace Corporation is a genetic visionary despite being sightless, using cybernetic cameras as eyeballs to create reproducible replicants. Directed with great visual p...
