May 14, 2024 · Gamma rays (symbol: γ) are a type of electromagnetic radiation with frequencies above 10 19 Hz and wavelengths shorter than 10 picometers (1 x 10 −11 meters). They are located at the extreme end of the electromagnetic spectrum, beyond X-rays. The energy of gamma rays typically exceeds 100 keV (kilo-electronvolts).
The electromagnetic spectrum. Light, or electromagnetic radiation, comes in many forms. There are radio waves, microwaves, infrared light, visible light, ultraviolet light, X-rays and gamma rays, all of which form what is known as the 'electromagnetic spectrum'. The electromagnetic spectrum is subdivided into seven regions according to wavelength.
A gamma ray, also known as gamma radiation (symbol. γ. ), is a penetrating form of electromagnetic radiation arising from the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei. It consists of the shortest wavelength electromagnetic waves, typically shorter than those of X-rays. With frequencies above 30 exahertz (3 × 1019 Hz) and wavelengths less than 10 ...

The portion with the shortest wavelength and highest frequency is gamma radiation. Visible light, which is the portion of the spectrum that we can see, is roughly in ...
Gamma rays are high frequency (or shortest wavelength) electromagnetic radiation and carry a lot of energy. They pass through most types of material. Only something hard, like a lead block or a thick concrete block, can stop their transmission. Gamma rays have a wavelength range below 100 pm and frequencies greater than 10 Hz.
Natural sources of gamma rays include gamma decay from naturally occurring radioisotopes such as potassium-40, and also as a secondary radiation from atmospheric interactions with cosmic ray particles. Exotic astrophysical processes will also produce gamma rays. Gamma rays are ionizing radiation and are thus biologically hazardous.

Electromagnetic radiation with the shortest wavelengths, no longer than 0.01 nanometer, is categorized as gamma rays (1 nanometer = 10 –9 meters; see Appendix D). The name gamma comes from the third letter of the Greek alphabet: gamma rays were the third kind of radiation discovered coming from radioactive atoms when physicists first investigated their behavior.
