The good news is that Mojang can still fix it, if they change Minecraft from using OpenGL to Vulkan and with incremental performance updates to world generation/memory management. But they probably won't as the main focus of Mojang is on Bedrock, that has better performance (ignore the increasing bugs and decreasing performance with every release).

Java (the Mojang website one) is much more capable to mod and toy around with, however Bedrock Edition (the Microsoft one) runs a lot smoother and has cross platform play. Theres a lot more differences to mention though, those are just the three big ones.

The game's base mechanics for many features is mediocre at best and Mojang never adds anything that allows new or more efficient means of play. Hence why instead of fixing the issues with tool progression, durability and enchanting they just nerf mending.
