  1. Nov 7, 2011 · MSVC has the huge advantage of coming with an IDE that has no equals under Windows, including debugger support. The probably best alternative for MinGW would be Code::Blocks, but there are worlds in between, especially regarding code completion and the debugger.

  2. Some software only supports MSVC on Windows (e.g. CPython, including native modules) so you may have to use it. The only advantage is that you get a statically-linked CRT — versus linking against an old msvcrt.dll per Mingw-w64 — though historically Microsoft's UCRT has been kind of buggy, and those bugs then get baked into your binaries.

  3. For mingw, you want to download and install MSYS2. Using the builtin terminal, search for gcc pacman -Ss gcc. You can install gcc for "mingw32", "mingw64", or "ucrt64"; I always use "ucrt64" pacman -S ucrt64/mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-gcc.

  4. MinGW because it's the closest to GCC and gives me a good indication of whether or not my code will compile cross-platform without having to wait for the build system. My code has to run on OSX, Linux and Windows. Visual C++ because it often has higher performance with math calculations than MinGW. It's often comparable to GCC on Linux though.

  5. MSVC is doing the compilation job significantly faster than MinGW-w64. The DLL sizes are comparable, if optimization is set to "-O2" for MinGW-w64, with "-O3" the DLLs from MinGW-w64 are larger. Binary files compiled with MinGW-w64 are performing significantly better than those compiled with MSVC.

  8. Oct 13, 2022 · In general the MSVC based Clang provides better compatibility with other Windows binary libraries and the system in general, while using the Msys2 subsystem flavor can work better if there are some other dependencies that heavily rely on GNU tools and wouldn’t work well with the MSVC compiler.
