I get more from Mulholland Drive every time I see it. I thought I had a handle on it years ago but it works on multiple levels. I think there are key things you need to get the maximum out of it. Some awareness of the golden age of Hollywood, especially 'Sunset Boulevard' & the dark side of Hollywood. Also some grasp of Jung & Freudian theories.
I think Mulholland Drive is a great place to start. It's probably the most watchable and easily accessible David Lynch film (not counting The Straight Story, which is well outside the style/genre David Lynch is known for).
