I think there are key things you need to get the maximum out of it. Some awareness of the golden age of Hollywood, especially 'Sunset Boulevard' & the dark side of Hollywood.   5. Mulholland drive keeps a fine balance between all the elements needed for a perfect mystery. The overall atmosphere is not too light, but not too dark either (most of the scenes have a daylight brightness, there are some comedic moments etc.).
