Jul 5, 2018 · Locking the box would mean hiding the reality, and constructing her fantasy. So when Rita opens the box, the dream falls apart. The blue box appears in Betty/Diane’s lap at the end of the opera. As I pointed out earlier, this is the culmination of her fantasy. Or rather, it signifies Diane/Betty waking up.
Feb 1, 2018 · The second key is found by Betty and Rita at Club Silencio near the end of the fantasy dream, and is soon after used by Rita to open the mysterious blue box that she’s had in her possession since she showed up at Havenhurst with no memory. Betty disappears the moment the key and the box are present in the scene together; Rita disappears when the box is finally opened.

Nov 4, 2021 · The enigmatic neo-noir Mulholland Drive — directed by David Lynch and shot by Peter Deming, ASC — began as the 1999 pilot for a proposed ABC TV series. When the show was not picked up, it was turned into a feature film with supplemental material shot a year and a half later, and released in theaters on October 19, 2001.
I guess the series would have been focused on Betty & Rita finding Rita's true identity. I suspect the "Betty being Diane" angle must have been introduced to give the film that conclusion that wouldn't have been present in the pilot. Remember that Rita thinks her name might be Diane Selwyn at one point in the film.

A metallic blue box drops to the carpet: this sequence, nearly two hours into David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001), opens up a seam in what has for the most part been a linear narrative and annihilates the viewer’s expectations of solving the mystery that has to this point driven the events in the film.
