Feb 20, 2024 · Seahorse by oceanpup01. While Nemo is still in the Marine Life Institute he meets Sheldon, who is a seahorse, same as his dad Bob. There are 46 species of real life seahorses, all within the genus Hippocampus. The word hippocampus literally means “horse sea monster / horse sea animal”.

- ‘Nemo’ – clownfish. The lead character of the film, Nemo (voiced by Alexander Gould) and his father, Marlin (Albert Brooks) and mother, Coral (Elizabeth Perkins) are clownfish – ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) to be more precise, sometimes called the false percula clownfish or common clownfish.
- ‘Dory’ – blue tang. The bubbly character of Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) plays a major role in the cast of Finding Nemo – and her own 2016 sequel, Finding Dory – and is based on the real-life Paracanthurus hepatus, known variously as the Pacific blue tang, regal blue tang, royal blue tang and – rather bizarrely – the blue hippo tang.
- ‘Bruce’ – great white shark. Bruce, voiced by the late Barry Humphries, is a great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), the largest of all predatory sharks in the ocean.
- ‘Crush’ – green turtle. Crush (voiced by Andrew Stanton) is a green turtle (Chelonia mydas), is the largest of the hard-shelled sea turtles and the second-largest of the seven species overall (after the leatherback).
Nemo's real name is ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris). All anemonefish are protandrous hermaphrodites, meaning they first develop into males and may become females later in life. Anemonefish exhibit phenotypic plasticity when males, females, and juveniles inhabit the same anemone.
- Clownfish – Nemo and Marlin. Where else to begin our odyssey through the fish of Finding Nemo than with Nemo himself? Nemo and his anxious pa, Marlin, are depicted as clownfish in the film, and given just how cute these little guys are in real life, we’d say this was a perfect choice.
- Regal Tang – Dory. Next is the regal tang or ‘DORY!’ as the species is known to most children who walk through the doors of Bristol Aquarium. Yes, this iconic blue, black and yellow fish depicts Marlin’s lovable sidekick in the Finding Nemo franchise, voiced wonderfully by none other than US talk show royalty, Ellen DeGeneres.
- Starfish – Peach. Starfish have long captured the imagination and have been depicted on the big screen hundreds of times. Perhaps the most famous outing for this unique species, however, was in Finding Nemo, with ‘Peach’ the starfish appearing alongside a handful of other tropical fish in the dentist’s office fish tank.
- Seahorse – Sheldon. Seahorses have a naturally cheeky and curious persona, so it makes sense that they were chosen to depict Sheldon – a spirited young seahorse that leads Nemo close to the “drop-off” along with their other school friends at the start of the movie.
Dory, on the other hand, is a surgeonfish. It has a beautiful light blue collar and a yellow stripe across the fin on the back. They are also known as “tang” and there are more than 75 species of these little fine little tropical fish.

This is kind of accurate since it’s actually the father who carries the fertilized egg from the female in real-life seahorse species. Sadly, of the 1,000 fully formed seahorse babies that will come out of the father’s pouch, only about 0.5% or 50 of them will survive to become adults.
