Jun 5, 2024 · Now that Pinehurst has attained double-digit golf courses, and now that I have played them all, here is my ranking, from best to “worst.” 1. Pinehurst No. 2 is Pinehurst Resort’s best golf course
- Tim Gavrich
- Pinehurst No 2. The fact Pinehurst No 2 tops this list will come as no surprise. Donald Ross’s masterpiece is of one the world’s great golf courses, an all-time American classic, an iconic name and brand in world golf.
- Tobacco Road Golf Club. Tobacco Road is one of golf’s most wonderfully unconventional and uncompromising layouts. Located around 30 minutes from Pinehurst, the architecture is unapologetically bold.
- Pinehurst No 4. Pinehurst No 4 is far more than a submissive younger sibling to its more celebrated big brother – Pinehurst No 2. Originally designed by Donald Ross in 1919, Pinehurst No 4 has undergone multiple restorations and redesigns over the decades, but the most significant and influential was by Gil Hanse in 2018.
- The Cradle. The Cradle at Pinehurst rocks. Yes, it’s a short course, no it’s not 18 holes but, while we know it’s a controversial opinion, in our view The Cradle at Pinehurst absolutely deserves its place on this list of Pinehurst Golf Courses ranked.
- No. 1 in North Carolina: Pinehurst No. 2. This is the grandaddy of Pinehurst, the layout even non-golfing spouses are most likely to have heard of. It’s the site of three past U.S. Opens with five more on the schedule, including in 2024.
- No. 2 in North Carolina: Pinehurst No. 4. While No. 2 was restored to its Ross roots a decade ago, architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner more recently went another direction with No. 4, but with a similar aesthetic in mind.
- No. 3 in North Carolina: Mid Pines. As courses age, they usually need more than a nip and tuck to retain the playing characteristics established by the original designer.
- No. 4 in North Carolina: Pine Needles. Across the street from Mid Pines is its sister course, Pine Needles. As with Mid Pines, Pine Needles is a Ross layout that was restored by Kyle Franz, with work wrapping up in 2018.

Pinehurst is a fully functioning resort, so even though golf is at the center of it all, golf isn’t the only activity on the table when you’re staying at the resort. For starters, Pinehurst’s spa is almost as famous as the golf.
