Is it a good RPG, are the quests interesting, is the world exciting and really open, can you "collect" companions like in Risen, are the characters good? If you're not scared of old graphics - go for Gothic 1. If you're a bit scared of old graphics, but not need newest game - go for Risen 1. Just remember: plot, dialogues and music are better in Gothic. If you really want to play on console, most likely Elex is the best choice.
Controls are weird, I give you that. Gothic 3 is more modern, but very problematic game in many ways. At a release it was a playable bug, and it is still very buggy game. It definitely needs to be played with the community patch. But I've enjoyed it a lot. So I recommend all Gothic-games and first Risen.
May 31, 2018 · So they have released seven games in their history, which is roughly around twenty years now: Gothic Gothic 2 + Night of the Raven Gothic 3 Risen Risen 2 Risen 3 ELEX Four of the seven are high quality RPGs: Gothic, Gothic 2, Risen, and ELEX. The other 3 are not very good. But the good ones...
ChrisSZ: Besides Elex, I love the whole Risen series, all 3 games. I know many people criticize Risen, but you should take that with a grain of salt, because mainly those are GOG (grumpy old Gothic) fans looking through their rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia.
If you dig those as well, well, play Gothic (old, crazy combat scheme, but cool) and Risen 2 (just use muskets, avoid all other combat types, trust me). Straight up skip Gothic 3. Gothic 1 is the best. Though Risen and Elex both worth trying, IMO.
