Polk has received maybe a little more attention than some of the presidents around him from biographers, and has several fairly recent books that cover his life and presidency. This one is reasonably scholarly, but incredibly easy to read.

Remarkably, this 2008 biography of James Polk seems to be the first comprehensive work on the eleventh president for at least several decades prior to its publication.
