Oct 26, 2024 · Reading was a Danish encampment as early as 871. Between the 12th and 16th centuries it was dominated by a struggle for privileges between the abbey and the emergent merchants’ guild. The town suffered severely in the English Civil Wars of the mid-17th century. By the 17th century the town’s trade, notably in clothing, had begun to decline.
