Minnesota's oldest suburb claim. Richfield was one of the earliest postwar suburbs in the Twin Cities to be populated by veterans returning from World War II, but its claim to be Minnesota's oldest suburb date to the land's connection to Fort Snelling in the 1820s. The term "suburb" is from the Latin suburbium, "the land outside a walled city".

Richfield: Minnesota's Oldest Suburb. Author: Frederick L. Johnson. Publisher: Richfield Historical Society. Publication Date: 2008. Edition: First Edition.
In the mid 1800's Richfield enveloped all of Edina, half of St. Louis Park and nearly half of Minneapolis, extending all the way up to Lake St. By the 1920's Richfield was already one half the size it was, and although the areas around it were developing, Richfield remained a farming community.
