It has been described as a short term view (Maienschein, 1998) of knowing science and even labelled as “science literacy” to distinguish it from a longer term view of “scientific literacy”. The term science literacy, how-ever, is not common, and for the most part it seems to be a play on words.

In this report, we document what is known about the components of science literacy, the contexts in which it arises and is used, the foundational literacy and numeracy skills that are prerequisite to it, and the ways in which it is applied, supported, and constrained.

Jul 14, 2023 · Scientific literacy has been perhaps the single most touted goal of science teaching over the last 40 years, and it continues to be examined and debated in academic journals and policy circles to this day (see, e.g., Osborne, 2023; Sharon & Baram-Tsabari, 2020).
Scientific literacy is not the same as science literacy. The latter focuses on the acquisition of scientific or technical knowledge for practical application, in order to train the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians.
