As someone else said, Splendor is a game where your opportunities grow as you play. With Azul, your choices get more limited. I feel like Splendor is a game where players can learn to think ahead and strategize, and Azul is a game where it’s better to have that skill going in to the game. I recommend Splendor first, then Azul as a next step.
Marvel Splendor is like the base game with 1 of the ok mini expansions built in. So it's better than base game but not quite as good as base + expansion. But I must say this: I love Splendor but my kids won't play it because it's "so boring." They do think Marvel Splendor is "really fun" despite being almost identical gameplay.

When a player reaches 15 prestige points, complete the current round so that each player has played the same number of turns. The player who then has the highest number of prestige points is declared the winner (don’t forget to count your nobles). Splendor is one of the first games I bought after getting back into games and even with my collection hovering ~120 games, it's still the most requested game in my house. I fully expect my grandkids to be enjoying Splendor. My kids bring it out over and over again. They don't seem likely to get bored of it any time soon.
