They are subtle, aren't gratuitous and are effective in advancing the story-line. If you HATE jump-scares - as numerous folks apparently do - this film is not something to fret over and shouldn't be skipped on that regard.
The Others is an extremely creepy, unsettling, and effective horror flick. I first saw this theatrically in early September 2001, right before 9/11. The ending twist is not something I saw coming the first time around.
The Others is the first intelligent horror film in years, completely relying on atmosphere and eerie set pieces. It's such a relief to finally see a subtle film that is also effective!

Throughout the film, we find the children talking about “the last time.” Something happened the last time that made the servants go away without a word. This ‘something’ was a result of Grace “going mad.” It is also mentioned that she hurt the children, and it must have been pretty bad to make Anne shout, “she will not stop until she’s killed us.” ...
Aug 10, 2001 · This is a haunted house movie, dark and atmospheric, but it’s quiet and brooding. It has less in common with, say, “The House on Haunted Hill” than with “ The Sixth Sense ” or a story by Oliver Onions.
Recommendation. The first time I have watched it, I was mind blown. And then I kept watching it again and again to see what were the scenes and hints I have missed. To this day, I am still mind blown just how good the timing, acting, and cinematography were.
