Nov 13, 2016 · The 2016 Atari Flashback Portable is great, it has a rechargeable battery, an AV out port, many built-in games, and an SD card slot for adding even more games! All for about $50. It's generated a lot of enthusiasm, as well as many questions. Does the Atari Flashback Portable have a cartridge slot? No, it has a slot for an SD card, which is better.
Oct 1, 2017 · But since the Portable is, well, portable, I thought it would be a fun little unit to have on the go, so I figured it might be cool to grab one. The spartan contents of the box: the console, manual, and USB cable. The unit itself looks identical to ATGames’ Sega Genesis portable (which I have not played), with a d-pad and six action buttons.
Nov 24, 2017 · I was wondering if anyone has tried both the AtarI Flashback Portable 2016 and 2017 models? Is it worth an upgrade? Is the Rom capability any better? How about the screen and form factor? etc. Thanks much!

In the box you get the handheld itself, a miniUSB cable for charging, and instructions. The handheld measures approximately 5.5 inches across, 2.5 inches high, and about three quarters of an inch deep.
As expected, the Atari Flashback Portable is basically a handheld version of the Atari Flashback 7 console, just like the Sega Genesis Ultimate Portable Game Player is a handheld version of the Sega Genesis Classic Game Console. Although the Flashback Portable sports a newer generation of the hardware powering Flashback 7, there is no noticeable di...
You can see the full list of 60 games here (remember, my pre-production review unit and a limited number of early release units have a different list of 60 games). Basically, they’re a mix of first and third party titles, along with some homebrews (Froggeris a new port specific to the 2016 Flashback hardware). Although there is no hardware paddle o...
Since this is a dedicated handheld, the unit only supports single player games that make use of the original console’s left joystick port. This means oddball games like Basketball or Wizard of Wor that make player one use the right joystick port don’t work the way they’re supposed to (look out for hacks that helpfully reverse the ports! (refer to t...
The built-in LCD has good brightness and color (remember to remove the clear plastic shipping cover on the screen!), and no motion blur. It does a good job of displaying the low resolution content. There’s a single speaker, but you can plug in headphones for added audio punch. There is also a composite AV connection, which allows you to connect to ...
The Atari Flashback Portable is probably as close to perfect as AtGames has gotten with any of its hardware to date. It uses the proven handheld design from their long-lived Sega Genesis Ultimate Portable Game Player series and makes the tweaks necessary to give it a proper Atari 2600-centric identity. Hopefully for next year’s version we’ll see fu...
Sep 14, 2018 · It's fun for some 2600 games. I've played a lot of Enduro for example, the base shooters work great, etc. Games with precise diagonal control requirements or 4 way directional inputs fair poorly though, which admittedly is a huge chunk of the 2600's joystick-compatible library. But myself and it seems like a fair amount of AtariAge users that have been active in
Dec 26, 2016 · The Atari Flashback Portable is a sturdy, light-weight unit that includes a 3.2 inch display, speakers, a power-switch, rechargeable battery (with an included cable), headphone jack, AV-out (via mini-plug), volume control, power-indicator LED, and an SD-Card slot (more on this later). There is a D-pad, 6-control buttons (one of the cutely ...
