The Hallicrafters SX-28 will do just that. For a receiver made and sold in 1940-1941 they're just incredible. Selectivity is adequate when using the included crystal filter, sensitivity is even good on 10 meters.
This is a tough review to write because I like older receivers like the SX-28 and SX-28A. Lets do the pros first. Great styling, especially in its original cabinet. Front panels usually in good condition (excellent paint). These have the Lamb type noise limiter which works very well. Excellent audio quality and plenty of power. Good sensitivity.
Apr 17, 1998 · The inductors in the SX-28 are mounted directly to the main chassis and are adjusted using the protruding screws. Whereas, in the SX-28A, the inductors and capacitors for each section are mounted on boards to form modular units. The inductors are tuned by directly accessing the notched tuning slugs. I have the manuals to both the SX-28 and SX-28A.
Mar 4, 2012 · The SX-28 is undoubtedly Hallicrafters’ finest pre-World War II radio (excluding Hallicrafter’s special dual diversity DD-1). This radio came from the era in which the “boatanchor” moniker was born. The SX-28 is a well engineered and heavy single conversion broadcast and HF receiver offering coverage from .55 to 42 MHz in 6 bands.
The SX-28's 1940 Introduction. Hallicrafters announced the SX-28 "Super Skyrider" in July of 1940. The receiver's ultimate design was the result of the analysis of more than 600 requested reports, including input from government engineers.
May 12, 2003 · A separate, but interesting subject -- the SX-71, take a look at the foto below, and compare the construction of the RF sections in it & the SX-28. I got into the -71 recently when I realized the antenna coils were open. They're a little more accessible than those in the -28, but not a lot. The compartmentalized construction is very similar.

In the early 1980's, I acquired a Hallicrafters SX-28/28A from the early 40's. It started getting hot some years later, so I haven't powered it up since. The original wax&paper caps values are pretty much not readable any more and I don't have experience rebuilding old radios, but I was told by the previous owner that the caps would likely be the culprit.
