  1. Oct 19, 2018 · Dynamite Headdy was a game that had the benefit of coming from a developer that was well-respected at the time. However, this caused many critics to over-praise the game. While there are some unique character designs and visuals, Dynamite Headdy is far from Treasure’s best work.

    • Streets Of Rage 3. Streets of Rage is a beat 'em up game that can best be described as a mix between Golden Axe and Street Fighter. It has the street fighting action element from Street Fighter and the multiple-enemies from any side element of Golden Axe.
    • Earthworm Jim. Earthworm Jim is one of those games you will never be able to forget due to the uniqueness of the game. The first version was released in 1994 by Shiny Entertainment and was a huge success.
    • The Addams Family. When you hear the title The Addams Family, you probably automatically hear a certain song start playing in your head and so it is with the game too.
    • Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Sonic the Hedgehog is an awesome platform game that is almost synonymous with the Sega Genesis. The game was released by Sega themselves and was an answer to their rival's famous Super Mario Bros.
    • Contra: Hard Corps. The Contra series is obviously synonymous with difficulty, which I actually feel is a bit of an unfair reputation. Yes, these games are tough, but much like Dark Souls, boiling the series down to that element means you often overlook the ways that difficulty level enhances so many of the other things that this franchise does well.
    • Chakan: The Forever Man. Any young Genesis fan needs to know the name Ed Annunziata. As a famous producer reportedly obsessed with ensuring kids didn’t beat games too quickly, he’s partially responsible for some of the hardest Sega games ever made.
    • The Immortal. I really tried to resist talking about The Immortal again after including it on a list of the hardest NES games, but how can you talk about the most difficult Genesis titles without giving this one a nod?
    • Target Earth. Target Earth looks like a standard shooter, but this one earns its high spot on this list by virtue of some truly befuddling (some would say “bad”) controls that make this game harder than it arguably needed to be.

    • Light Crusader. The last title to be released by developer Treasure on the Genesis, Light Crusader was released in 1995 and published by Sega. The gallant Sir David returns to the village of Green Row only to become swept up in a quest to save kidnapped townspeople from a mad wizard.
    • Ranger X. One of the best technical showcases for the Genesis, Ranger X was developed by GAU Entertainment and published by Sega in 1993. Taking control of the powerful Ranger X exoskeleton, players must battle to save their planet from the evil Rahuna forces.
    • Golden Axe III. Golden Axe III was developed and published by Sega in 1993 and was considered to be the worst in the series upon its release. Due to Sega’s low expectations for it, Golden Axe III was only released in the US via the Sega Channel service.
    • Master Of Monsters. Developed by SystemSoft and released in 1991, Master of Monsters is a turn-based strategy RPG that is steeped in fantasy and mythology.
    • Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Yes, this is technically two games, but Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were originally designed as one massive Sonic game, and, thanks to the revolutionary lock-on technology, they could even be played as such despite technically being released a year apart from each other.
    • Phantasy Star IV. One area where the Sega Genesis really lagged behind the SNES was RPGs. While SquareSoft pumped out hit after hit for Nintendo, the Genesis got….well, not much, to be honest.
    • Gunstar Heroes. No one outside of this game’s development team believed in Gunstar Heroes initially. It was envisioned by a group of Konami employees who successfully tried to pitch the game to their employer.
    • Monster World IV. At first glance, Monster World IV looks like a pretty typical ‘90s platformer (albeit quite the colorful one). However, once you actually start playing it, you see just how much depth it boasts.
  2. Jul 14, 2022 · 1 Ecco the Dolphin. Appaloosa Interactive/SEGA. Ecco the Dolphin is a game designed to make children cry. It sits on a Blockbuster and/or Sam Goody shelf, looking very much like a game for toddlers, with a big smiling dolphin on the front. It has the appearance of a lisa frank sticker you can plug into a game console.
