Development of The Scorch Trials was announced on October, 2013 after 20th Century F" x bought the rights to the Book. T.S. Nowlin, who worked on the Fantastic Four reboot, would pen the script, taking over for Noah Oppenheim. Nowlin completed the script soon before filming began, with returning director Wes Ball supervising the script. Ken Barthelmey, who worked on the Griever designs for the first film, would return to design the Cranks.
