Vertigo is a very clever movie about a long con reverse engineered from the protagonist's inability to look down from heights without getting dizzy and nauseous. It basically gives him a panic attack to look down from even a step ladder.

Vertigo's greatness iisn't plot-driven to me, its character development and themes are what make it an all-time great (along with its cinematography and editing and production design and performances and score and... you get the point).
Vertigo is good because it shows the way artifice can be twisted into reality by events set in motion by artifice which are no longer within its power. It shows that the boundary between the way things appear and the way they actually are is very permeable, if it exists at all.
