Throughout his life, sheriff-turned-gunfighter John Bernard "J.B." Books has committed thirty-plus killings. Now an older man, Books arrives in Carson City, Nevada, in late January 1901. He gets into a confrontation with dairyman Jay Cobb, but Cobb's assistant, Gillom Rogers, defuses the situation.
The film co-starred such legendary actors as Lauren Bacall and Jimmy Stewart, and it included other high-profile names: Ron Howard, Scatman Crothers, Richard Boone, Harry Morgan, and John Carradine all come to mind.

It is poignant and thoughtful and it encapsulates perfectly that whole ‘end of the West’ theme, yet at the same time it is a classic ‘showdown’ Western in the great tradition.

In his time, the Shootist shot a lot of men dead. Out at the livery stable, burnt into the leather of his saddle, they find his name: J.B. Books. His arrival in Carson City immediately becomes news. Hostetler steers him over to a boarding house run by the Widow Rogers, who shows him a two-dollar room. It’ll do fine. Books settles down to die.
