The consistency is sticky and thick, like a paste and it does carry a very faint Sulfur scent to it - nothing too strong in my opinion. I began to use it as a mask for 15-30 minutes when I first got it after my evening skincare routine. It definitely gave my skin a tingle!
I know sulfur based products can be prescribed to treat rosacea-- I have personally tried a sulfur wash and Soolantra before with limited success.
