In 1973 with the addition of the 'power ported' piston and block, became and 85hp. Then in 1978 it was relabeled 80hp, and in 1984 it was 'prop rated' as a 75 hp until its discontinuation in the late 80s.

The 18hp was a flawless engine and I ran it hard for several years. It performed just fine when I sold it and I'll always remember that motor fondly.

The first site is for Mercury Australia, the 2nd is Mercury Marine U.S., and I'd imagine that Down Under the octane of their petrol is calculated a bit differently. Most 2-strokes, unless they're a High Performance model or being raced, will run fine on 87 octane regular unleaded.

  7. May 12, 2017 · They had to be towed in. Come to find out, a valve spring gave dumping the valve into the cylinder destroying the engine. I was awestruck. I've never heard of that happening to ANY new outboard. Needless to say, Mercury is hanging a brand new engine on the back of the boat. An $11,000 dollar outboard lasted 3 hours.
