- Atlantics. Director Mati Diop’s Cannes-winning feature debut is a dystopian gothic romance full of elegant, unforgettable imagery. Mama Sané plays a young, lower-class Senegalese woman whose lover drowns at sea while attempting to migrate to Spain, and her ensuing emotional disarray manifests in a series of strange happenings.

The fact that it’s possible to watch Sydney Pollack’s absolutely electrifying documentary of Aretha Franklin recording her gospel album of the same name at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles is a miracle twice over: first, because the footage wasn’t properly synchronized when Pollack and his crew shot it in 1972, and it was assumed that could never be corrected.
